Room to Grow

Dear Fellow Travelers,

I love this time of year when temperatures drop and the breeze promises falling leaves and acorns crunching under foot. On a recent cool morning I was walking in the park and noticed a little girl playing in jeans and a tee shirt. The sight of her brought an odd wave of nostalgic sadness. My mind flashed back immediately to years ago when, as the mother of young boys, I would be planning Halloween costumes and baked goods made from the pears growing in our yard. As I wandered down memory lane taking in the scenery of my sons through the years, I found myself thinking of how I had enjoyed each phase of their childhood. I pondered if I would have wanted to give up any one phase by keeping them locked into a particular age. The answer was a resounding No. However much I loved being their mom during the preschool years, if I had somehow been able to freeze us in that time, I would have missed the joy and excitement of the first day of school. I continued reviewing and became present to how each developmental stage had traded one joy for another.

I’ve lost those days of running in the park, of picking out a kitten at the shelter with wide-eyed little boys, but as that time has passed it  has yielded other things. In place of a teenage boy planning his first date, now I have a grown son who drives me to a friend’s memorial out of town. A son who teaches me all he knows about social media promotion once piled into bed and listened to me read The Chronicles of Narnia. These thoughts make me present to a truth in life. No matter how much we enjoy something, how valuable it is, or how meaningful a time or situation in our life; when it’s time to move on, if we’re unwilling, we can miss out on the next great piece. Kind of like the seasons. . . if we hold on to summer, what autumn joys do we lose? If we hold on to fall, we might never experience the magic of snowflakes falling gently through the trees. Life is a progression of unique seasons. Each one brings its own joy, mysteries and treasures. I personally wouldn’t want to miss the next new adventure.

I had no control over the aging of my children any more than we can stop the progression of one season to the next.  In the areas of our lives where we do have control, we have to have the courage to welcome new times. I have to remind myself of this on a regular basis when endings are in sight. I tell myself not to hold on too tightly to what is, because I will keep myself from having what may be. Not everyone loves fall as I do; others prefer the heat of summer or the chill of winter. My wish for you in this favorite season of mine is that you will have courage enough to allow leaves from seasons past to slip gently from your hands leaving room for delightful, new growth.

If you're ready to let go of what no longer serves you and would like some guidance, I'd be honored to assist you. Send me a message through the contact page.

Blessings & Light,
Sherry

We have had our summer evenings, now for October eves!”
